How we Built this: Drink To Forget 2020

We’ve all played card games growing up but we play cards ALL THE TIME. Our favorite being Monopoly Deal — A fast paced version of Monopoly that takes a little time to learn but is one of the best quick strategy card games we’ve ever found. We’ve taught 100’s of people and each time we do, we buy them a deck off of Amazon so they can spread the good word of Monopoly Deal.

One beautiful afternoon in Denver we had the idea of making our own Card Game and started doing some research. There’s a ton of different card games out there but we found a lot of them were either really or complex or tbh.. very nerdy. We stumbled across “drinking card games for adults” and bought a couple of them. Not to throw our competitors under the bus but here’s the ones we tested.

Buzzed – This game had over 2,000 reviews and has been on Amazon since 2016. We were excited to play it with 2 new friends and an hour later felt very underwhelmed. The game was loosely structured around a couple of different categories but the cards were as vanilla as it gets. Ex. Drink if you’re wearing pants… Needless to say we saw room for improvement.

This Game Will Get You Drunk – Again, very simple drinking game with unoriginal cards. At this point, we’re sitting there wondering how these games have sold so well over the last few years.

From there we had an idea of what was out in the market and could see the other competitor’s cards from their website and Amazon Listing and came to our final conclusion. These games either lack any sense of creativity or were very specific to college kids with cards like “Get naked and run to the street and back or Take 2 Drinks”.

So we set out to make a relevant, witty, and appropriate drinking card game that could be played by anyone ages 25-65. We made over 1,000 cards and printed them out, laminated them and cut them up in little squares. From there we tested on our friends, family, and some random people we found on the street lol. We wanted to find a balance of offensive/edgy and creative/funny and we think we did. At one point we contracted our bosses 16 year old daughter to make the game “cancel proof” meaning she flagged every card that could be considered offensive. We then tested the game and my goodness, was it boring. So we realized we do need to offend someone but maybe not to the point where they start threatening us on Twitter. We knew we were close.

After some fairly aggressive debates determining the last 20 cards we sent the file off to production and patiently waited for our pallet to show up a month later. Now here we are with an active Amazon Listing for a game we randomly thought of 6 months ago. It’s been fun, it’s been stressful but we’re very proud of what we have been able to bring to market.

We hope you enjoy Drink To Forget Games!
